E909 – Spermaceti wax

Glazing agent

Description

Spermaceti wax is a white, waxy substance obtained from the head cavities of sperm whales. It's primarily composed of cetyl palmitate and other esters. It has emollient, thickening, and lubricating properties.

Notes

**Spermaceti wax is a unique waxy substance that was historically extracted from cavities in the heads of sperm whales.** This white, odorless material has a distinctive property of being liquid at body temperature but solid at room temperature, making it particularly valuable for certain applications. The substance is obtained through processing of sperm whale oil, though this practice has been largely discontinued due to conservation efforts. **In food applications, spermaceti wax served as a glazing agent, providing a shiny, protective coating to certain products.** It was occasionally used to give confectionery items and some processed foods an attractive glossy finish, though its use in food was never widespread even when whales were more commonly hunted. **This additive is now extremely rare in modern food production due to international whaling restrictions and conservation efforts protecting sperm whales.** Most countries have banned or severely restricted whale hunting, making spermaceti wax virtually unavailable for commercial food use. It would not be suitable for vegetarian, vegan, halal, or kosher diets due to its animal origin. Today, synthetic alternatives and plant-based waxes have replaced spermaceti wax in virtually all applications.
