E566 – Natrolite-phonolite
Description
Hydrated sodium aluminosilicate; Zeolite mineral
Notes
Natrolite is a naturally occurring mineral that belongs to a family called zeolites – think of these as nature's tiny sponges made of silicon, aluminium, and sodium all bound together with water molecules. This particular zeolite forms in volcanic rocks over thousands of years as hot water flows through cavities in the rock, depositing these crystalline structures. It's mined from natural deposits and then processed into a fine powder for use in food applications. As an anticaking agent, natrolite works by absorbing moisture that would otherwise cause powdered foods to stick together and form lumps. You'll find it in powdered seasonings, spice blends, powdered drink mixes, and some processed foods where keeping ingredients free-flowing is important. Its porous structure acts like a microscopic moisture absorber, keeping your powdered products from turning into solid blocks. This additive is completely natural, being mined directly from the earth rather than manufactured in a laboratory. It's suitable for all dietary preferences including vegan, vegetarian, kosher, and halal diets since it's simply a processed mineral. There are no allergen concerns associated with natrolite, and because it's essentially an inert mineral that passes through the body unchanged, it's considered very safe for consumption in the small amounts used in food products.
