Notes

## E324 - Ethoxyquin **Ethoxyquin** is a **synthetic antioxidant** belonging to the **quinoline** family of chemicals. Originally developed as a rubber preservative in the 1950s, it's manufactured through industrial chemical processes and is particularly effective at preventing **rancidity and color degradation** in fats and oils. The compound works by interrupting the chemical chain reactions that cause oils to spoil and foods to lose their natural colors. This powerful antioxidant is primarily used in **animal feed** to keep pet food and livestock feed fresh during storage and transport. In human food, its use is much more limited - you might find it in certain **imported spices** and some **preserved fruits and vegetables**, though its application in foods for human consumption has become increasingly restricted in many countries. **E324 is synthetic** and technically suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets from an ingredient standpoint. However, this additive has become quite **controversial** due to safety concerns. The **European Union banned** ethoxyquin in food for human consumption in 2017, and many other countries have imposed strict limits or restrictions. While still permitted in animal feed under regulated conditions, its use in human food has largely been phased out in favor of safer alternatives like vitamin E (tocopherols) and other natural antioxidants.
