Notes
Silver (E174) is genuine metallic silver that has been finely ground into microscopic particles for use as an edible decoration. This is the same precious metal used in jewellery and coins, but it's been processed into food-grade particles small enough to be safely consumed. The production involves taking pure silver and grinding it down using specialized equipment under strict hygiene conditions to create particles that are typically between 0.1 to 5 micrometers in size - so small they appear as a smooth, lustrous coating when applied to food. Like aluminium, silver serves purely as a decorative colourant, providing foods with an elegant metallic silver appearance. It's commonly used on high-end chocolates, luxury desserts, premium confectionery, and special occasion cakes where an opulent metallic finish is desired. You might also see it used on traditional sweets in some cultures, particularly Indian mithai (sweets) where silver leaf called 'varak' has been used for centuries as an edible decoration. Silver E174 is a mineral additive that's suitable for all dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan, and religious dietary laws since it contains no animal or plant-derived ingredients. While silver is generally considered safe for occasional consumption in small amounts, it's worth noting that this is a luxury ingredient typically used sparingly for special occasions rather than everyday foods, which naturally limits exposure.
