Notes
Sunset yellow FCF is a synthetic orange-yellow food dye manufactured in chemical facilities using petroleum-based starting materials. It's created through a process that combines various chemical compounds to form what's called an 'azo dye' – a type of coloring agent known for producing vibrant, stable colors. The 'FCF' part of its name stands for 'Food, Cosmetic, and Food,' indicating it meets purity standards for these uses. This additive works purely as a colorant, giving foods an attractive orange-yellow appearance. You'll commonly encounter sunset yellow FCF in orange-flavored sodas, cheese-flavored snacks, cereals, candies, dessert mixes, and some processed foods where manufacturers want to enhance or create an appetizing color. It's particularly valued because it maintains its bright color even when foods are heated, frozen, or stored for extended periods. Sunset yellow FCF is entirely synthetic and suitable for vegetarians and vegans since it contains no animal products. However, this dye is one of several artificial colors that may cause hyperactivity and attention problems in some children, which is why products containing it must display warning labels in Europe. Additionally, people with aspirin sensitivity or asthma may want to avoid it, as azo dyes can sometimes trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
